It’s time for episode 11 of our FEATURE FRIDAY series and I’m thrilled to announce this week’s truly inspiring Mama and major beauty guru. Sara Happ (AKA The Lip Expert) is amazing in every way. She’s the Founder of her wildly successful luxury lip product line, Sara Happ Inc.  This mega babe is also a devoted and loving Mama to her adorable little girl, Julia.

If you haven’t heard of this line your lips are in for a treat. They’re about to be plumped, oh-so shiny and super smooth thanks to Sara’s revolutionary lip line. Sara is a true innovator. After spending several cold winters on the east coast, while working for ESPN, she constantly suffered from chapped lips and was on the hunt for lip scrub. After quickly realizing this product didn’t exist, in 2005, she set out on the quest of crafting her own. For several weeks she experimented in her kitchen to curated the yummiest and most effective lip scrub on earth. Shortly thereafter she put her product in pretty packaging and brought it to high-end boutiques in La La Land. Her lip scrub soon became sought after by several big name celebrities and that was the start of what is now sold at Nordstrom.   In addition to the scrub, she offers lip masks, lip treatments, an array of lip glosses, and my personal favorite “The Lip Slip.” It’s the most moisturizing and non-sticky lip gloss that looks good on everyone. This baby will never be leaving my purse.

Some of my FAVORITE takeaways from Sara:

+ Find your true Passion.

Working in sports wasn’t my passion. I would go home at night and I would read beauty editors say. I would sit in a ball bath with like 19 different products and like soak away. While all my colleagues were watching Sports Center and streaming seven games. I was like, This is not my love. So I was almost inspired by how uninspired I was at work.

+ The Purpose of Lip Scrub.

It should be yummy, and it should be hydrating. It should solve the problem with chapped lips. I was just looking to fill a whole in the market basically…. The first time I used my little concussion, I just scrubbed my lips and suddenly they were bright pink. Suddenly all the dead skin was gone…I had full body chills. I was like, Wait a minute. This is doing exactly what I wanted it to do, this is crazy. other girls are going to want this.

+ Conquering Mom Guilt.

You try to hit all your marks gracefully, but a lot of times I think none of us feel like we’re doing it right. You go to sleep at night worrying like you missed too much of Henry or you didn’t hit your mark, or you didn’t do one thing at work really well… You’re not super human and it’s okay. So my friend said the very fact that you’re so worried about doing a good job for your kid and the very fact that you have mom guilt about child means you’re probably doing a good job.

+ You don’t have to hide your work from your kids.

I think it’s important for our kids to know that we work. For the longest time I tried to separate it. I tried to be a stay at home mom in the morning, and then go to work while Julia napped. My business wasn’t doing what I needed it to do by doing that and so ramping up what I really need to be doing. Ultimately, everything we do actually is for our kids.

+ Own your journey

You build this career, and you build this whole world for yourself. Then to do a 180 and be a full-time mom, that’s a different career path. So I think it’s finding the balance of still fulfilling my creative brain needs by going to work… It’s okay to need that. I have stay-at-home moms that are girlfriends, that say that fulfills them more than anything. They can’t imagine going to an office and that’s amazing too, that’s their gift.

+ Time management is essential.

When it comes to time management, that struggle is real. When I am with Julia, I am truly with Julia. I don’t have my phone with me, I’m not reachable through work. So my Julia time is all about Julia. If I’m on a plane, Julia can’t reach me either, you know? So there’s sort of a give and take and also I think having people around you to help is important. Like I’m lucky enough to have a team that supports me and supports my motherhood, and supports my connection to Julia. They protect my time too.
